La Academia is a Mexican reality musical talent show shown on Azteca, that premiered in June 2002 and it's currently in its tenth installment. Although the show itself is not affiliated with the Endemol franchise, which includes the "Star Academy" shows, it does share the competition format of many of the variants of the global franchise. Over the first seasons, the show was a reliable dominator of its time-slot, which was shown by its triumph over Televisa's Operación Triunfo Mexico. The rival show was only produced for one season, and was in fact the official Endemol entry in Mexico. However, the last seasons of La Academia have had declining ratings, being aired against the Mexican version of The Voice, produced by Televisa. The show has been franchised to other countries: Azerbaijan, Malaysia, Indonesia, United States, Paraguay, Singapore, Thailand, and Central America.

La Academia USA is the first musical reality show with only Hispanic contestants launched by Azteca America in October 2005. The auditions were done nation-wide and a total of 30 people were chosen to go to Mexico where they would have to spend a week working hard and showing all of what they had inside to be chosen to the final 18. The first La Academia USA concert was on November 20, 2005. A week before the first concert, there was a special show that lasted two hours. In that show, footage from the auditions was shown. At the end, 12 of the 30 were eliminated leaving the lucky 18 that Azteca America had chosen to become the first generation of La Academia USA. One of the participants was Michael Muenchow, who was previously on Telemundo's song-based reality show Nuevas Voces De America in 2005; he was one of the 18 selected. Michael lives in San Antonio, Texas and made it to the top 13 final singers, before being expelled. His vote off was one of the results that caused the most uproar among viewers and the teachers alike. This was also true for the premature elimination, in the eleventh concert, of Diana, whom many thought would become the winner of La Academia USA for her great voice, big popularity among the public and the good comments by the critics.

Segunda Oportunidad is a Mexican reality show produced by TV Azteca and Azteca América that reunites non-winning contestants from the first seven seasons of La Academia as well as La Academia USA and is hosted by Rafael Araneda, Betty Monroe and Miss Universe 2003 Amelia Vega. The 52 contestants, divided into teams of four members each, spend each week at an isolated location learning and developing their artistic skills, then compete against each other during a weekly concert for TV viewers and a live studio audience and face elimination. Producers stated the composition of each team on March 10, 2010. The 52 contestants will be living in Emilio "Indio" Fernandez's home. Only 2 contestants were not announced for the competition, but instead were left six hopeful contestants were placed on an online vote, where viewers needed to choose between Jolette, Azeneth, Anahí, Gerardo, Luis Armando, or Raúl Sandoval. On March 17, 2010, the voting was closed; Anahí and Gerardo were chosen. On April 25, 2010, Diana Galindo asked if she can take part in the program. She has been given the chance through an open vote by the public, where they will decide whether she joins the contest or not. On May 9, during concert 7, Diana became the 53rd contestant.
