Kirill Lavrov

The Master and Margarita is a Russian television production of Telekanal Rossiya, based on the novel The Master and Margarita, written by Soviet writer Mikhail Bulgakov between 1928 and 1940. Vladimir Bortko directed this adaptation and was also its screenwriter.

Year 1920. A well known singer Zinaida Casarosa arrives in a small provincial town with a concert program. Her admirer Svechnikov invites her to sing at an Esperanto club. During the concert she is shot dead by an unknown person. It is Svechnikov's duty to find out the name of the killer. The mystery of her death becomes no less complicated that her life.

The story of the Great Patriotic War: pages of memories, documents, and chronicle. The film uses materials from the State Film Fund of the USSR, the State Archive of Cinema and Photodocuments of the USSR, the Radio and Television Fund, the Film Studio of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, the KGB of the USSR, and the Institute of Military History of the USSR.

Set in December of 1917 after the Bolshevik revolution in Russia. Lenin and the communists are making every effort to strengthen their power. Lenin appoints Felix Dzerzhinsky the Commissar for Internal Affairs and the head of the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission for Combating Counter-Revolution and Sabotage (CheKa). It became the predecessor of GPU and KGB.

The film follows the fate of the Strogov peasant family. The story takes place in Western Siberia in the late 1940s.
