In dystopic times, after a law that prohibits laughter was approved, people live in an environment of fear and mistrust. The freedom to express any kind of joy in public no longer exists. As part of the resistance, a group of actors and scriptwriters decide to create a clandestine movement allowing people to laugh in secret. Everything else is noise.

Vitória returns determined to recover her children, Afonso, Matilde, and Francisco, after serving an unjust prison sentence. Her father-in-law, Manuel Mendonça, a powerful and manipulative man, has managed to separate his grandchildren from their mother and will do everything to keep her away from her family. The story chronicles the life of Portuguese entrepreneur Rui Nabeiro, founder of Delta Cafés, set against the backdrop of his hometown, Campo Maior.

Based on Eça de Queiroz's 1875 novel, the plot takes place in Leiria, Portugal, at the end of the 1860s, and follows the story of the forbidden passion between Amaro, a young priest, and Amélia, "the most beautiful girl in Leiria". Tense, emotional and rooted in personality conflicts, the series takes a critical look at society and the church in Portugal, in Leiria in the 19th century.

Inside, the Government’s chief, Marcelo Caetano, waited, surrounded by the military and the people.
