A BBC Television Training film that pulls back the curtain on how TV was really made in the 1960s, clipboards, call sheets, and all. It’s a fascinatingly dry yet oddly hypnotic look at the mechanics of production: script breakdowns, scheduling, budgeting, and the careful choreography between departments that kept live and recorded shows on air.

Around 1995 I found a canister with a tattered strip of black-and-white 16mm film. I could make out the words "Train Film", "Bernhard", and "August 9, 1973" on a crumbling piece of paper. I glued the film strip, which was still in good enough shape to be shown, together in the same sequence in which I found it. Because the first run through the projector caused more damage to the perforation of the brittle film, I had to work on it again and, to be safe, filmed the second screening with a Hi8 video camera. I over-looked the fact that a yellow filter was mounted on it at the time. I mixed up a few scenes during the second round of repairs, and the result was slightly surreal drama which is ideal for this film. (Dietmar Brehm)
