Studio 54 was the epicenter of 70s hedonism - a place that not only redefined the nightclub, but also came to symbolize an entire era. “Kim has explored the conditions of contemporary life encompassed by digital media and representational devices, creating original video work that combine powerful images and unfamiliar narratives based on autobiographical experiences . . . His new work, Studies (2024), is a fiction film with cinematic experimentation borrowing from the horror film genre. Heecheon Kim has invented a fantasy of horror that opens up a new dimension of creation in which the fragility of borders allows a possibility of narratives.”

Wyborny’s latest flicker film concentrates on factories, industrial wastelands, waterways, cityscapes, and the bits in between, and has an uncanny emotional resonance. It is “serene, in the manner of ants”—to quote the title of the second section—but it is also elegiac and melancholy. Like two other old cranks (Godard and Straub), the director stays true to ideas about filmic composition gestated over many years and thereby provides a glimpse of a utopian cinema.

Study of movement from Eadweard Muybridge’s work.

The director transferred three pieces of the great composer to the screen, each with a different stylistic setting: the romantic nocturne was illustrated with images of nature; the exuberant Mazurka F minor, with a folk dance performed by Russian Ballet artists. The most interesting conception of the Revolutionary Etude had elements of abstract interplay of shapes and lights interspersed with takes of explosions, shouting faces distorted with a grimace, planes, and flames burning down symbolic icons of Polishness. Color Studies of Chopin was a propaganda film to lift the spirits and hearts of Poles in exile and at the same time to win over other nations’ sympathy for the Polish cause. To this end Cękalski roped in Olin Downes, a popular radio presenter and music critic, who overdubbed the beginning with a preface.

The film includes sections which explore the illusion of movement within the frame, the movement created by the filming and projection equipment, of movement suggested by camera manipulation (e.g. zoom, re-focus, etc.). Structural Studies exemplified the Hein’s central project of elaborating the central process of the cinema, situating those processes equally in terms of artistic production and mechanical reproduction.

There are about 140 landscapes painted by Claude Monet in Pourville during 4 long stays between 1882 and 1897. The coastline has hardly changed since then.
