The rebellious Thracian Spartacus, born and raised a slave, is sold to Gladiator trainer Batiatus. Under the leadership of Spartacus, they make their way to southern Italy, where they will cross the sea and return to their homes.

The second adaptation of Raffaello Giovagnoli's novel comes at a time when Italy really started pumping out their epic films with the longer running times, expensive sets and lavish production values.
