The HMI’s arduous training program has been developing mountaineers who play crucial roles in the success of Himalayan ascents. In 1967, HMI’s field director Nawang Gombu, a Sherpa and the first man to summit Everest twice, was charged with training women as well. In Sherpa: the Proving Grounds we follow a team of intrepid young women as they attack the grueling 28-day course.

Despite having lost many friends and family in the Himalayas, 15-time Everest summiteer Jangbu has to continue climbing in order to support his family. As their journey continues, the two face multiple challenges and have to make few last minute decisions to avoid serious obstacles. Overcrowding on Everest was a harsh reality in 2019, and Jangbu and Karma had no way but to deal with it to complete their mission.

The main aim of the 1922 expedition was to make the first ascent of Mount Everest. There are two attempts in May via the North Ridge. The first by Mallory, Morshead, Norton and Somervell is without oxygen and reaches 26,985ft. The second by Geoffrey Bruce and Finch reaches 27,300ft and sets a new altitude record. Captain Noel toured the world with this film, and wherever he went the picture was received enthusiastically. It was the first film of an Everest expedition, and the earliest documentary filmed in Tibet.
