Salem, Massachusetts. A small town—with no clear governing body—became embroiled in a scandal that forever stands as one of the darkest chapters in American history. For those accused of witchcraft by their neighbors and friends, there was little chance of clearing their names; the mass paranoia that ravaged through the community took the lives of 19 innocent men and women.

Scores of people were imprisoned and executed during the infamous Salem witch trials of the 1600s. Investigators examine the era's rampant anti-witch sentiment from a scientific viewpoint, testing some of the theories that have been proposed over the years. The documentary is part of Discovery Channel's "Unsolved History" series, which takes a detailed forensic approach to some of history's most vexing mysteries.
