Hazuki works part-time at a movie theater. Though she lives at home with her parents, she no longer even exchanges greetings with her father. One day, Hazuki is invited on a trip to India by a co-worker, but she is less than thrilled.

The River of Life and Death captures the slow time in the well-known Indian pilgrimage place of Benares, the act of purification by water, the burning funeral pyres, and the dandling snakeheads under the temple stairs.

Two babies are switched at birth. When the mistake is discovered 12 years later, it leads to complications in the lives of both families. One family is affluent, with dutiful and (apparently) contented children. The other family is poor, with rambunctious (even delinquent) children, often hungry, but with lots of laughter in the house.

The film was awarded the Award of the Academy of Russian Television TEFI-2011 in the categories "Television documentary" and "Director of a television documentary / series".
