Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz 1992-2017. The end of the GDR gave rise to new artistic freedoms in reunited Berlin. Shortly after the fall of the Wall, rebel director Frank Castorf was appointed artistic director of the Volksbühne. His way of working altered the public’s perception of this theater. The chronological history of the Castorf era between 1992 and 2017 is told here in excerpts from the productions and in a series of conversations conducted on the long sofa in the theater's foyer.

From the first days of the WWII, an underground Komsomol organization "Partisan Spark" was established in a small Ukrainian village Krymka, captured by the fascists. It was headed by a ninth-grader Parfen Grechanyi. Young underground members, yesterday's schoolchildren, led a brave and courageous fight against the occupants. Beginning with the defeat of a fascist convoy that was taking bread from the village, the Sparkers were terrifying the enemies with their combat operations. It was 1943. The organization grew and became stronger. One day a rash act of a desperate boy Shura Kuchera leads the enemies on the trail of the underground group members....

The film has two stories. Story 1: A group f partisans, fighting against the enemy and harsh winter storm, comes to the village where locals are hostile to them. Story 2: One night during the war, a daughter of railway station chief helps the wounded partisan commander to escape; however Germans discover her deeds, and kill her.

Reporter for a North Korean news service joins the partisans when the Americans and UN forces invade South Korea.

After the 8th September 1943 north of Italy is occupied by Germans. Italian army collapsed and the soldiers are escaped to the mountains trying to set up a resistance. Many civilians did the same and Johnny, an English literature student, is among them. Johnny avoids to band together the red partisans (communists) and tries to be part of the azure bands (former regular soldiers). But in both cases he is deluded by the partisan bands and discovers that the partisan war is less poetic and genuine that he thought. At one point anyway the partisans free Alba from Germans. When the city falls again in German hands Johnny escape with Ettore and Pierre. But, one after another, German army and Italian fascists captures the partisans and Johnny will pass the winter alone and isolated. He then finds the way to participate to one of the last attack to occupants, in fact the war will be over two months later.

The film is based on a previously untold story of Juozas Paliūnas-Rytas, the leader of the so-called ‘Revival District’ and his dramatic battle.

In 1918 a young and simple Mongol herdsman and trapper is cheated out of a valuable fox fur by a European capitalist fur trader. Ostracized from the trading post, he escapes to the hills after brawling with the trader who cheated him. However he is captured by the British when they try to requisition cattle from the herdsmen at the same time as the commandant meets with a reincarnated Grand Lama. After the trapper is shot, the army discovers an amulet that suggests he is a direct descendant of Genghis Khan. They find him still alive, so the army restores his health and plans to use him as the head of a puppet regime. The trapper is thus thrust into prominence as he is placed in charge of the puppet government. By the end, however, the "puppet" turns against his masters in an outburst of fury.
