Oracle is a short, experimental work of videopoetry, where Leena Aboutaleb narrates her long-form prose poem over scenes shot on Super 8 film by Youssef ElNahas, with sound by Raouf Nefzi. The film derives inspiration from Etel Adnan’s ‘Le Livre de la Mer,’ as we meditate on the Mediterranean Sea and our relationship to it. Our choice of location emerges from our shared homeland of Egypt and our inspiration from the work of Sappho, Constantine Cavafy, and Etel Adnan. Utilising their mythos and works, Oracle is crafted to map a beginning in our artistic practice by exploring the Mediterranean Sea and our relationships to it. We invite the audience to witness our homes on the Eastern Mediterranean, Palestine and Egypt, and the relationships we share with neighbouring lands.

Nature the ultimate voice of god

Oracle is a meditation on the relationship between plants, humans, and technology. Filmed collaboratively by Ben Tong and Alice Wang at Biosphere2 in Oracle, Arizona — a self-contained ecosystem enclosed in a 3.14-acre glass and steel structure, the work defamiliarizes the synthetic structure and the organisms living within it. In the age of the Holocene, the space of Biosphere2 becomes an allegory for our entanglement with the world. Despite our technological interventions, we find that it is no longer the case that we can disregard the noumenal world. Forces and substances like CO2, bacteria, UV rays, the weather and viruses exert their own presence. What is at stake is another way of relating to our mediated environment, our place within it, and death.

The monastery of Nechung has a very special position among these: indeed, its abbot is the medium of the protective spirit of Tibet which guides the Dalai Lama and his government in exile. You are invited to follow the Venerable Thupten Ngodup in his daily life, when this smiling monk indulges himself in his gardening and painting hobbies and in his role as oracle when the Dalai Lama asks him to go into trance: he 'lends' his physical body to the spirit of Nechung Chokyong which delivers predictions and pieces of advice to the political and spiritual head of Tibet in exile.

With the relationship between mother and daughter as a common theme, the film is divided into 9 image rooms with action patterns that are based on archetypal images and motifs. The film is unconventional in its choice of means of action. This is a video performance of their holiest ritual, the Sabbath Assembly, as recorded August 23, 2009 at The Silent Movie Theater in Los Angeles CA. About 50% of the video is the ritual itself, consisting of recitations from their unique liturgy interspersed with vintage hymns. The text is read by original Process minister Sammy M Nasr and the songs are performed here by the band Sabbath Assembly (Jex Thoth, Imaad Wasif, Kevin Rutmanis and Dave Nuss - obviously taking their name from the ceremony itself). Following the ritual is a slideshow presentation on the church narrated by original Process member/author Timothy Wyllie and finally a Q&A interview with Timothy conducted by Feral House publisher Adam Parfrey. So while it's not a documentary exactly, you certainly learn about the history of the church, its practices, and get a good feel of what it was like to be a member.

Out of the spiritual chaos of the 1960s, more strange cults and unorthodox messiahs have emerged than ever. Charles Manson is seen as the annoying result of libertarianism of the 1960s - the Cain who murdered the Abel from The Love Generation. Or in the words of one commentator; "the Elvis of alienation."
