"Old Town explores the idea that liminal space can be functional and magic, a poem or even a facilitator for both fact and fiction."

Inspired by a true incident, Shen Yu's debut OLD TOWN GIRLS tells a tale about how an unsustained economic boom desolates working-class communities and familial relations. Tempted by living a new life as a professional dancer in big cities, Qu Ting bid farewell to her marriage in a decaying rust belt town, leaving behind her infant daughter Shui Qing, who’s been alienated by her dad’s new family since. Never felt equally loveable as her peers, Shui Qing instantly gets carried away by Qu Ting's worldly charisma and maternal attention when the two meet seventeen years later. But the high schooler is soon forced to face the reality behind her mom’s sudden reappearance and years of unglamorous survival. As dangers loom, she decides to sacrifice everything for the slim chance of reunification.

Documentary photographs of Warsaw by an unknown author, probably dating from the late 1930s or early 1940s. The film begins with a map indicating where the material was shot. We see, among others, a panorama of the Old Town from the side of the Vistula River and the Market Square and people walking around it. The shots are juxtaposed with photographs of the same locations, but after the war damage. We see, for example, ruined tenements, bullet and shrapnel holes in the façade details, tape stuck to the windowpanes at the time of the bombings, tons of rubble and devastated churches - the Archcathedral Basilica of St John the Baptist and the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The tenement houses at the Old Town of Lublin have two contradictory faces: beautiful facades for the eyes of the tourists and hidden derelict courtyards and apartments for the inhabitants.
