The film was made in 1935 in what is now Inner Mongolia, but which was then part of Japan's puppet state of Manchukuo or Manchuria, explaining the presence of Manchu officials sporting queues and pointed tasselled hats, both of which had disappeared by this time in the rest of republican China.

The film starts in Nalaikh where old Mongolchaan is one of the many former miners who - after the closure of the mine - continues digging for coal in order to survive. Despite the extremely severe working conditions, he perseveres to support his children. Mongolchaan sells his coal to Basandorj, a middleman between the coal pits and the power stations in the city. Basandorj delivers the coal to a power station where young Erdenetsetseg is in charge. Despite the harsh environment, she enjoys her life and work. The electricity produced by the power plant enlightens blind Amarjarkhal's apartment. Ever since she moved from Nalaikh to the capital she makes a living as a writer and performer of popular songs.

White Dust from Mongolia is a project by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha including a film and artist book. Neither were completed. Theresa and James Cha visited Korea in 1980 for 3 months, May-July. While in Korea they filmed White Dust from Mongolia. James shot the footage. The footage includes shots of Seoul, rooftops, a women's university, train station near the university, forest, market, the Secret Palace, airplane ride in amusement park, and hotel fire. The film scenario for White Dust from Mongolia suggests Theresa intended to edit the footage shot in Korea and add additional images and text.

Mongolia is perceived as one of the most isolated, inaccessible locations in the world. In 1997 it proved a suitably challenging environment for an event billed as the world's greatest adventure challenge - the Camel Trophy. Forty competitors from 20 nations gathered in the modern capital of Ulaanbaatar for the start of Camel '97. From there they took their Land Rover Discoverys over existing roads and tracks through a country of extremes - from the sub-zero temperatures of the northern mountains to the heat of the Gobi desert. After circumnavigating a country three times the size of France, the event finished in the ancient capital of Karakorum, home of Mongolia's largest Buddhist monastery. Along the way, the teams visited eight competition sites and also competed in mountain biking, kayaking, 4x4 driving and orienteering awards.

Alain Desjacques, a well-known ethnomusicologist, takes us on a pilgrimmage to find and record the best traditional musicians and singers on the steppes of Mongolia. Desjacques had spent time in Mongolia before and had learned the language. Thus he was welcomed and given access to domestic life, with its closely knit families and intergenerational living. Set against stunning vistas of the rugged terrain, the film captures not only the music, but the richly textured details of daily life - hospitality customs, food preparation, games, caring for the herds. It is a portrait of a people who live almost entirely off their animals - horses, yaks, camels, and sheep - with little contact with the outside world.Travelling by horseback, truck and foot, Desjacques tracks down the most revered diphonic musicians. The diphonic sound combines a base drone with a melodic upper register. We hear part of an epic song which takes the singer seven days to perform, completely from memory.
