It was released on October 27, 2009 through Victory Records and was produced by Jamie King.[9] Despite containing only six tracks (their least tracked full-length release to date), the album reaches nearly an hour in total time length. The album contains some of their lengthier songs such as "Swim to the Moon" which surpasses 17 minutes. Frontman, Tommy Giles Rogers described The Great Misdirect as "some of the best material we've ever created. The deluxe edition of the album was released on October 26, it included a "making of" documentary about the album, a walk through of all the band members' gear, and a 5.1 surround sound mix of the album.
