A documentary that follows the career of one of the most unique names in Brazilian independent cinema. Over the past 30 years, Felipe M. Guerra has made horror films starring his own grandmother, documentaries with cult filmmakers like Ruggero Deodato and Roger Corman, and no-budget shorts featuring Brazilian celebrities. More than a biopic, "Amateur" draws a parallel between Guerra's career and the Brazilian independent fantastic cinema scene, revealing a culturally relevant filmography that inspires new generations to create their own films - proving that it is possible to make movies without the best cameras or the biggest budgets.

The film predominantly features interviews with over a dozen documentary filmmakers and researchers, including Wu Wenguang, Duan Jinchuan, Jiang Yue, Kang Jianning, Li Hong, Du Haibin, Yang Lina, and Hao Yuejun. It provides insights into their representative works, delves into their life experiences, and explores their creative philosophies.

With interviews with National Artists Lamberto Avellana and Lino Brocka and myriad talents from the Mowelfund community such as Nick Deocampo and Raymond Red, Beyond Mainstream documents the robust energy of nascent independent filmmaking in the country in the 80s. Based on Nick Deocampo's first book Short Film: The Emergence of a New Philippine Cinema (1985), it features the first Independent Film and Video Festival held in the Wave Cinema in Cubao, Quezon City, the first video theater in the country.

The rise of independent cinema in China occurred after the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident. Filmmakers such as Zhang Yuan, Wu Wenguang, Wang Xiaoshuai, Jia Zhangke, and others emerged as representatives of this movement. Over the course of more than a decade, from the 1990s to the early 21st century, they created a large number of outstanding domestic underground films that had a profound impact on the international film industry. However, in China, these films faced restrictions and were unable to be screened in theaters due to a lack of official approval. This documentary conducts interviews with these representative film directors of that era. Through the lens, these directors express their personal journeys in engaging in the art of filmmaking within a forbidden environment.

During the 1970s I shot, helped to make, or commissioned about ten document films, mainly about film-makers. This film is one of them. It was made with Dan Ochiva, who acted as cameraman on about half of the footage. I shot the rest, and then edited the film. It is a record of a conference held at the State University of New York at Buffalo on March 22-25, 1973. Among the participants filmed were Gerald O'Grady (who organized the conference), Will Hindle, Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas, Robert Creeley, Bruce Baillie, Scott Bartlett, Hollis Frampton, Ken Jacobs, Ed Pincus, Stan Vanderbeek, Ed Emshwiller, Sally Dixon, James Cox.
