The lasting legacy of the 1970 Kentucky Derby has nothing to do with the winner, Dust Commander. Its true impact came from the assignment that Scanlan’s magazine gave to a 32-year-old writer from Louisville named Hunter S. Thompson. Director Michael D. Ratner revisits that story in this 30 for 30 Short, talking with the late journalist’s editors and friends and the actor who tried to revive what is known as “gonzo journalism,” Sean Penn. The piece that Thompson turned in—fantastical, riotous and, by the way, late—opened so many eyes that “gonzo journalism” became an art form. As Thompson’s partner in crime, illustrator Ralph Steadman, says, “We were the face of the crowd we’d gone there to find.”

Upstream (into America) starts in southern New Mexico along the Texas and Mexico border and ends near the northern state border. The super 8mm film depicts a succession of glimpses of the Rio Grande riverbed, in chronological sequence, from its driest points to flowing streams near the top of the state along the Colorado border. Controlled by the US Bureau of Reclamation, the Rio Grande river is fractured by over-appropriated irrigation systems supplying New Mexico and Texas. For the majority of the year, for a time period that continues to grow, the river runs dry starting from someplace below Elephant Butte Dam to around Ojinaga where it is reformed by other source rivers. Upstream (into America) reduces the Rio Grande to its essence, water—and thereby, the absence of water. As the images shift from sand to water, they seem to hold aspirations of resources, abundance, and life, but depict the actuality of corporate exploitation, hoarding, and environmental crisis.

In Comma Boat, we're stuck in a mock-authoritarian fantasy--a power trip. The film centers around a director-character played by Trecartin who oscillates between feelings of omnipotence and self-doubt. As if a post-human, post-gendered reincarnation of the Fellini character in 8 ½, the director gloats and frets about professional and ethical transgressions. "I know I lied to get ahead," he admits at one point. "I've made up so many different alphabets just to get ahead in my field." The director is fancier now, but the fear nags that he might be "repeating" himself "like a dumb soldier ova and ova and ova and ova." The meta-connection to the artist's own career, while obvious, is also a decoy. All art, at some level, is about the artist. Here, reflexivity is the surface level, providing a decodable veneer that encases something more unsettling and complex. Single-channel and 3-channel versions.
