Though Phish has anything but a mainstream audience, the jam band continues to be one of the most successful touring acts in all of the music business today. With that success comes unique and exciting opportunities, like the chance to perform at the famed Farm Aid benefit… with its founders. That’s what happened on this day in 1998, when Phish joined forces with Neil Young for an extended sit-in at Farm Aid that also featured a sit-in on “Moonlight in Vermont” from Willie Nelson and Paul Schaffer. After a few original songs, Young made his first appearance with the band after a “Runaway Jim” segued into “Arc.” Phish and Neil Young then played “Down By The River,” before the guest-filled “Moonlight in Vermont” came next in the set.

Held just 18 days after the September 11th attacks, Farm Aid 2001, A Concert for America, celebrated the solidarity, innovation, and hard work of family farmers in keeping America strong. Farm Aid was founded in 1985 by Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, and Neil Young to raise public awareness about the plight of the American family farmer and to provide assistance to those families whose livelihood depends on agriculture. In the past 16 years, Farm Aid has raised over $23 million. This concert captures the spirit of a historic 2001 event. Performed on September 29, 2001, in Noblesville, Indiana, this sold-out Farm Aid concert featured a star-studded lineup including founder Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and Farm Aid's newest board member, Dave Matthews. Also performing are Arlo Guthrie, the Doobie Brothers, and Martina McBride, all of whom gave memorable performances to demonstrate their commitment to America's family farmer.

Farm Aid’s annual concert, an all-day music and food festival, will take place on September 16 in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Jack Johnson, and Sheryl Crow will be headlining, among many other prominent musicians. Proceeds from the concert will benefit small family farms by providing farmers with resources and support.
