"Reform of Public Life," taught by the French advisor, "Marital Jealousy," taught by the Dutch advisor, etc. Kotsos, like a good student, tries to change his mindset and adapt to the new circumstances, and then does his best to satisfy the nine beautiful representatives of the European states who come to Greece to assess his progress. They party with him and leave him physically exhausted, but award him the gold medal for his excellent "performance."

In the shadow of its own narratives of freedom, Europe has been quietly building its own great wall. Like its famous Chinese precursor, this wall has been piecemeal in construction, diverse in form and dubious in utility.
