Elements relates directly to space, to impregnable landscapes and uncertain horizons. As the motifs, taken from the website "Alaska Weather Camera Program", are small airfields in Alaska, the weather conditions there, time lapse and collage make the functional data disappear. In the same way the concrete objects like cars and planes disappear.

This atmospheric landscape is largely un-peopled but nevertheless expresses the busy presence of ghosts that reside in the snowy fog-bound woods, the movement of the moon and in the hesitancy of the clouds. It is an exploration of location/place both macro and micro, visited by a few incidental shadowy figures related to one another through the rhythm of their gestures.

One of the earlier works Hill produced on the Rutt/Etra video synthesizer, Elements combines abstract “landscapes” with fragmented syllabic language. Undulating topological forms superimpose themselves on one another, changing their shape and direction of movement.

Elements refers not only to the natural elements, which are variable and even capricious, but also to the social elements, working-class people who are trying to maintain order and routine. – Karen Treanor. NYFF “Views from the Avant Garde”

Elements contains a danse macabre, where skeletons furnished with organs mechanically and cheerfully move around in a ring like one great living catastrophic carousel.

Beginning with black, the potential, adding only the basis of the film phenomenon, the film ritual, the concepts of causation, and primordial semiotics, the work is an annunciation. –L. H.
