The essence of progress in civilization has always been handiwork. In traditional Chinese civilization, the emperor was supreme. Vested with the authority to enjoy the best of handiwork, all crafts used for residence, clothing, food, and travel were the most refined and splendid.

Suzhou is a city where the ancient and the modern co-exist. For more than 2,500 years, the city has passed down a large number of intangible cultural heritages, including lantern painting, nuclear carving, Song brocade, Ming furniture, boat dots, Suzhou embroidery, Xiangshan gang construction, woof silk and jade carving. The film tells the story of the past lives of these nine crafts and the tender stories that occur between the inheritors and their crafts from the perspective of 12 representative inheritors.

In a collaboration of a different approach, visvim and creative Young Kim (also known as Suitman) create a film titled “A Cycle of Craftsmanship”. visvim’s penchant for quality and story-telling are no secret as this film focuses on a Kyo-Ningyo (Kyoto Doll) shop and its sixteen generation history. The 400 year-old store owner had begun to face some difficult times. Upholding quality, craftsmanship, a dwindling demand for Kyo-Ningyo had culminated into difficulty running a retail space while maintaining the same level of commitment. Eventually the store owner’s decision to close his store had a profound and introspective effect on visvim founder Hiroki Nakamura which led to the creation of this film. The multi-region DVD is available at F.I.L. stores across Japan and Asia.

The Shakers wrote songs of exquisite beauty and danced to the point of ecstasy during their religious meetings. Inspired by this music and dance, choreographer Tero Saarinen created Borrowed Light, a dance piece about communal life and individual sacrifice. Shot in Finland and the United States, featuring interviews and excerpts from Borrowed Light, this documentary explore the cultural legacy of this religious group devoted to creating heaven on earth.
