This short film is made for the "Chopin-Pletnev" disc which marked Mikhail Pletnev's debut as a pianist on Deutsche Grammophon. In the film, we witness Mr. Pletnev's journey, starting from him on his way to studio, through his performance of Chopin's Etude Op. 25 No. 7 in C sharp minor "The Cello" and the process afterwards. One is struck repeatedly by Pletnev's crystalline arpeggiations, the velocity of his passage work, his singing tone, his rhythmic suppleness, and, above all, the grandeur of his sound.

Max Ophuls directs this short film of Chopin's Valse Brillante.

Young Frederic Chopin comes of age during a tumultous time in Polish history.

As a sixteen-year-old student, Frederic Chopin spent his vacation in the Lower Silesia health resort of Duszniki. Its theatre saw the first public concert of the young composer and pianist. On the centennial of the event in 1946, a two-day Piano Festival was organized in Duszniki, which spawned a cyclic cultural event — the local Chopin Festival. It is the oldest music festival in Poland. Tadeusz Makarczyński's film shows beautiful landscapes of the Duszniki environs and the still extant Zdrojowy Theater. The musical background is Chopin's pieces, performed by the festival's participants: Zofia Rabcewiczowa and Henryk Sztompka.

It is a story about the Antilian history of Chopin's music and the fate of its creators. The music of the greatest Polish composer, Fryderyk Chopin, reached the Caribbean Island of Curaçao in the 19th century. It inspired local musicians to compose the “Caribbean Mazurka”. For many years the piece has been known as the national dance of Curaçao. The music and its variations reflect the tragic history of the island and although the tunes are seemingly distant, they profoundly resemble Chopin's compositions. The film centers on Randal Corsen, the most outstanding local pianist, who plans to write pieces inspired by Chopin, for traditional instruments and in some new arrangements. He is joined by Janusz Olejniczak, an internationally recognised composer, enthusiast and interpreter of Chopin's music. The artists intend to invite contemporary musicians from Curaçao, who have not yet played Chopin, to perform the music together.

The director transferred three pieces of the great composer to the screen, each with a different stylistic setting: the romantic nocturne was illustrated with images of nature; the exuberant Mazurka F minor, with a folk dance performed by Russian Ballet artists. The most interesting conception of the Revolutionary Etude had elements of abstract interplay of shapes and lights interspersed with takes of explosions, shouting faces distorted with a grimace, planes, and flames burning down symbolic icons of Polishness. Color Studies of Chopin was a propaganda film to lift the spirits and hearts of Poles in exile and at the same time to win over other nations’ sympathy for the Polish cause. To this end Cękalski roped in Olin Downes, a popular radio presenter and music critic, who overdubbed the beginning with a preface.

The centennial of Frederic Chopin’s death was celebrated in 1949. The International Chopin Year was held under the auspice of UNESCO. Tadeusz Makarczyński’s film records renditions of Chopin’s mazurkas by entrants of the 4th Chopin International Piano Competition held in Warsaw in 1949. You can hear the performances of representatives from America and different countries in Europe: Halina Czerny-Stefańska and Bella Davidovich of the Soviet Union, the ex aequo winners of the 1st Prize; Carlos Rivero of Mexico, Yevgeniy Malinin of the Soviet Union, and Mireille Auxietre of France. Mazurkas are the essence of Chopin’s music and a symbol of Polishness; they are pieces which integrate young pianists from all over the world into one big “Chopin family”.

Original animated film made for the International Chopin Year. The soundtrack consists of Fryderyk Chopin's music performed by Justyna Steczkowska, Tomasz Stańko and Michał Urbaniak. The author rejects the pompous, exalted, pathos-laden, obligatory admiration that paralyses the possibility of hearing Chopin's music in a fresh way.
