Bologna is a bizarre place. However, outside is barbarism. The old city is besieged by a new savannah. Homeless, nomads, tourists, dropouts are only the vanguard of a new citizenship. The ancestors of future kings. This film is a back portrait, an out-of-focus, night-time appearance. We will carefully avoid showing great monuments, famous people and facts of proven historical significance. Instead It’s a portrait that goes for minor fragments, anonymous citizens, intruders. Lies.

Next Week in Bologna is a tongue-in-cheek nod to Italian Neo-Realism, shot in Rob Nilsson's Direct Action style. A pickpocket cinema projectionist in Bologna, Italy, narrates three intertwining stories of tourists who visit his city one summer. A timid adjunct professor from Australia receives word from a mysterious stranger about his imminent death while nervously preparing to present his paper on the classic film Last Year at Marienbad. An apostate ex-priest gifts a naive and destitute young couple with a camcorder...for possibly lecherous purposes. And, lastly, the pickpocket projectionist narrator pursues his own adventure with a lovely but understandably cautious Icelandic girl.

I wrote this text while I spent one summer afternoon in Bologna, sitting in front of an empty monumental cinema screen installed for the Il Cinema Ritrovato film festival in the city’s Piazza Maggiore. The subject of the text is the empty cinema screen itself. It is a first approximation of a writing practice performed in real time, in front of a specific phenomena and place. For its final form as a sound piece to be played in the setting of a darkened screening room, the original text was read aloud by Andrea Van Eyck in Madrid on October 4, 2024.
