This historical drama is based on a play by Henrik Ibsen and set in the year 1528. The central figure in the low-keyed story is a Norwegian noblewoman who is seeking to bring independence to that country despite the involved political intrigues of the Swedes and Danes, who are using Norway as a pawn in their rivalries.

Jens von Bustenskjold is a farmer despite his more promising family past when his family was of a fine descent. But he is lazy, and he wants to improve by marrying rich. Then he inherits a large sum of money.

The good priest gets a mystery to solve on his way home by ship to Oslo. A crew member dies, with a final wish to help Makken, and deliver a gold watch to Lily. But Lily denies knowing the man, and is scared when she hears the name Makken.

A lawyer comes up with a devious plan to kill his half sister and frame another man for the crime.

Student Tom Polden lives in difficult conditions at home. His mother lives constantly on the memories of her deceased husband. Her little hat shop is rather poor and the economy is peal. Tom constantly hear about the magnificent father, and becomes a big blow when he overhears his father shot himself because he had embezzled a substantial amount of money.

Arthur Sellmann is marrying Irene, and his friend, the spiritual Diana makes him read his future in the palm of his hands every week. Maybe he shouldn't have started believing what he is told.
