During a book signing in Normandy, Annie Ernaux, 70, revisits her memories of the summer of 1958, when she was 17. That summer, she left her hometown to work as a camp counsellor. At the first party, the head counsellor set out to deflower her. Finding him handsome, she lets him do it, as if against her will... Driven by a dream of freedom, they defied a ruthless empire with few resources but unwavering determination. Through previously unseen archives and the poignant accounts of the last survivors, this documentary reveals their clandestine struggle, their heroic sacrifices, and their legacy, timeless symbols of a desperate fight to escape the Soviet stranglehold and preserve the flame of independence.

In 2016, an album containing 250 previously unseen photos of Nazi officials was discovered in the USA by Stephan Hördler, a prominent Holocaust historian, who immediately understood the album's inestimable value. The album brings together photographs of a "group of friends," all from the same region of Germany, all of whom became SS men. From 1928 to 1943, the photo album allows us to follow their journey. Hördler conducted the investigation, comparing the photos in the album with other, better-known ones, the faces of these men with those of concentration camp officials, and ultimately revealed that it was at Lichtencburg that these young men were trained, a "school" for future camp executioners, and the bonds of camaraderie and informal network that would allow them to help each other, even after the war.

There were 23 young women, aged 18 to 20, doing their mandatory military service in a very special unit responsible for video surveillance of the Gaza Strip. In Israel, these young women are nicknamed the eyes of the state. Before October 7, they saw everything, understood everything. They sounded the alarm, but no one listened. They were both the Cassandras of the Hamas assault and its first victims. Today, the surviving watchwomen from the Gaza border and the parents of those who were killed have given themselves a mission. Together, they are demanding justice and truth and shedding light on the flaws in a security system that Israeli society believed to be guaranteed.
