The end of the XVIII century. The reign of Catherine II. In the deep Russian provinces, among the vast steppes of the Ural escaped convict Yemelyan Pugachev proclaimed himself Emperor Peter III of Russia. Under the banner of the Pretender embarked detachments of Cossacks, fugitive serfs, and many spirited people. In these troubled times in the God-forsaken Belogorsk young officer Pyotr Grinyov meets his first love - Masha, the daughter of Captain Mironov. Recklessly passionate love with each other did not want to notice the signs of impending trouble. They did not know that soon they will be an ordeal. They could not imagine how bizarre way their fates intertwined with the fate of the self-proclaimed king, and what an incredible effort will be worth it to save their lives and feelings in the bloody chaos of Russian riot.

A successful Moscow doctor, who has his own clinic, comes to his father in Minsk. His father was once one of the leading doctors of the city, and now he turned out to be unnecessary and forgotten. A junior employee of the Forest Research Institute is sent to collect mushrooms. In the forest, he meets a strange old woman, receives a silver horn and a magic club as a gift from her, and after some time ends up in prison as a counterfeiter. His connections with the mysterious old woman do not end there.

Set around the Volga river, the story begins around 1900, when Russian peasants are let free and allowed to own their farmlands. But soon they suffer from losses during the 1917 Russian Revolution and the following Civil War. Then, the major national catastrophe is started by Stalin: his communist government kills millions of farmers and steals all their food supplies, causing the longest and deadliest famine all over central Russia during the 1920s and 1930s.

In 1953, the year Stalin died, many prisoners (some political, but mostly common criminals) were released from the Soviet Gulags. This is the story of a remote settlement which was under attack by a bunch of these recently-released blood-thirsty thugs in the summer of 1953, and the townspeople, along with a two political prisoners, who try to stop them.

The events of the film take place in the first days of May 1966. Nikolai Kuznetsov, a distinguished veteran of the Great Patriotic War and former camp guard, accidentally meets one of his former prisoners. This encounter leads to new meetings—and new insights into the years that have passed...
