After three years at boarding school, Hanna is returning home to her little village to help her father's butcher’s shop during her break. Soon she learns that she is not welcome in the village. Everyone remembers the horrific news story about her mother’s death which was followed by the discovery of three dead men in the marsh. Superstition rules the village and everyone believes her mother was a witch that lured the men into the marsh directly to their death. While struggling to make friends, she meets extroverted city girl Eva. Thinking she has finally found a friend, Hanna’s confidence, and with that her "power", starts to grow, while scary accidents begin to happen around her.

Inspector Lukas Laim has the rope from which a corpse is hanging from the bridge on Prater Island cut. There are strange red marks on its stomach. The dead man is a notary from Grünwald who is well known in the city as a patron of Jewish art. And the marks on his stomach are in Hebrew and mean "retribution". Retribution for what? And why the Hebrew writing? Shortly afterwards, Laim learns of a blackmail letter to his mother, signed with the Hebrew word "Shilem". The blackmailers demand 80,000 euros so that the public does not find out that Laim's grandfather made his fortune in the course of Aryanization.

Karin Wegemann has been transferred. Instead of being on active duty at the LKA, she has been teaching prospective colleagues at the police academy for several months. Child trafficking in Germany has been Fellner's topic for years, but his articles ultimately have no effect whatsoever, and his harrowing research is at best denigrated as slander. Fellner needs Wegemann, but he needs her as an active police officer. He puts Wegemann under pressure and tells her about a 14-year-old witness who has put him on the trail of a child trafficking ring in Potsdam. Her investigation puts her in dire straits, because the perpetrators also know that there is a witness.

Out of the blue, actress Anna loses her job at a small municipal theater. Having just been on stage, she now finds herself in the dreariness of the local job center. At the insistence of her theater-enthusiastic caseworker, she takes over the management of an acting course for eight long-term unemployed people who are difficult to place. Despite enormous resistance to the compulsory training program, the frustrated lone fighters increasingly form a close-knit group with whom Anna stages Antigone. Surprisingly, the participants' private dramas become more and more turbulent and Anna also experiences a new beginning that she hadn't expected.

Again, the unemployed zookeeper Günther and the discarded salesman Wolfgang are looking for their great luck. Therefore, they get the help of a young man who, due to his autism, has extraordinary skills at the roulette table.
