A woman navigates the complex journey of motherhood while confronting her deepest fears and anxieties.

In the idyllic river landscape of the Elbe, two sets of parents share a farm and the upbringing of their children. When 12-year-old Aaron disappears during a summer festival, unresolved conflicts within the community come to light: the boy is struggling at school, and the adults must also face up to their own lies and crises.

Newspaper journalist Katja drinks too much. When she becomes abusive at an in-office birthday party while drunk, her boss gives her an ultimatum: sober up and deliver an excellent report on alcohol abuse, or be fired. Katja resigns, but soon begins researching and conducting interviews with doctors and alcoholics.

When the animal keeper Birgit gifts her daughter Sarah a parrot, the joy is great. While Sarah is teased at school because of her speech impediment, the parrot provides her with a sense of security.
