At The Kingdom, Denmark's most technologically advanced hospital, a number of strange and otherworldly events begin occurring, much to the dismay of its doctors and patients. A ghostly ambulance appears and disappears, the voice of a little girl calls to a patient in an elevator shaft, and a doctor's fetus begins growing at an alarming rate.

Architect William Sommer wants to organize his life in a practical and sensible way. Yet it is falling apart. His ex-wife will not settle for a check. The story opens just before Christmas, when solitary, apathetic bank clerk Flemming Borck uncovers a plot to rob his bank. After doing a little rookie recon, Borck identifies the would-be bank robber as a faux shopping-mall Santa Claus, and counter-plots to steal the money himself and let Santa take the blame. This works out about as badly as you might imagine, and our bumbling protagonist spirals further and further away from the carefree, laconic lifestyle he had hoped to ensure for himself.

In a large office building, a mysterious murder is committed, after which the body disappears. Lily Hansen, the building's helpful and talkative cleaning lady, is driving the detective investigating the case crazy with her interference. Of course, the mystery can only be solved with her help.

Thomas is newly divorced and is borrowing Bibi & Asger's apartment. He goes to the doctor because he is feeling unwell and is given some pills. After a night out on the town where Thomas gets drunk, he seeks out his divorced wife and begs her to come back.

A group of residents in the Copenhagen suburb of Solvænget decide to buy a farm in order to become self-sufficient in vegetables and other goodies. Unfortunately, farm life turns out to be much more strenuous and difficult than the small group of city dwellers had imagined.

Ellekjær's future is on Ann-Marie's mind. She tries to get her adopted daughter, Grete, married to Erik von der Rude, but Grete loves the farmhand Jørgen. They decide to get married, after which Annemarie disowns Grete. However, Ann-Marie's other daughter, Elin, is in love with Erik. Erik's past in Copenhagen catches up with him, and Elin moves in with her sister. The film then goes through a series of complications before Elin and Erik can finally get married and Ann-Marie is reunited with her daughters.
