A young and spoiled aristocrat is guilty of a hit-and-run accident.

Three Scottish noblemen escape from Gripsholm Castle and break into the home of Lord Arne. They kill everyone except for Lord Arne's adopted daughter Elsalill.

The king's skilled counsellor Göran Persson wants a royal policy supporting the people and supported by it. Subsequently the king tries to have them convicted of high treason by the parliament. He forgets the manuscript, mixes up all facts, and the noblemen are acquitted. But Göran speedily gathers another parliament and has them convicted. Meanwhile Erik apologises because of the unjust murders. Hence Erik is dethroned and imprisoned. Göran is executed. Karin is restricted to a castle in Finland. In the prison Erik believes that he is still the king and gives the guards presents such as all fishes in the Baltic Sea.

Olle works as maître d' and hopes to buy a hotel with money he borrowed. When his creditor dies Olle gets tricked by his lawyer and has to pay back 50,000 crowns in eight days. In order to pay the money he answers the ads in the newspaper looking for a maid.

Set on the island of Ven in the 1920s, Ellen is engaged with Per the sailor and waits for him while he is away at sea. She learns that she is pregnant and inquires about him at various hospitals, with no success. She reads of his engagement and becomes acquainted with another girl with a situation like her own.

The young girl Lisbet lives on the farm Tolfmansgården together with her mother, her older brother Jerker and their grandparents.

Old lady Malin Klintbom is being promised a cosy and comfortably life at the residential home she is invited to visit. However, she finds the home impossible to live at and flies in panic to her cabin.
