The wealthy farm heir Toni loves the maid Maria, but is supposed to marry the wealthy neighbor's daughter Annerl. She only has eyes for a penniless woodcarver. Only when Toni's stubborn father dies does a future for the lovers begin.

10-year-old Rosmarin von Stetten lives with his widowed father Robert in the big city. During the holidays one day in the morning Rosmarin goes to the lake near the castle and meets Thymian, the poorest boy of the village, whose mother did not come back from the war and who has to do several jobs in the village for his living. The boys enter a boat, but both fall into the lake. Thymian crawls out of the water first and is found by a servant from the castle, who thinks he is Rosmarin and bring him to the castle and to bed. The boy doesn't know what happens and thinks he's spellbound...

Austria, 1950s. Safety engineer Peter Dahle increasingly sees a personal enemy in the construction of the power station and the mountain of Kaprun. To protect his workers, he asks the experienced mountain guide Hans Tribusser for help. For the glockner king, the massive intervention in nature is tantamount to blasphemy and he refuses his support. This brings Dahle's former love onto the scene. Hannes Kähls von Kählsberg has hired himself out as a head farmhand on the estate out of love for Jutta, the beautiful young lady of the Salzerhof. Since she was widowed, Jutta has developed into a proud, domineering person who does not show Hannes the unconfessed feelings she has for him. She fights doggedly for the land of the salt mountain, which is the state salt works authority wants to dispute. Hannes urges her to give up because he thinks large parts of the underground tunnel are in danger of collapsing.
