Mr. Josef is an old-school servant who works in the house of the banker Türkheim. One day, he falls in love with a stray little dog and secretly takes the trusting animal into his home. But then bitter times begin for the old servant: Türkheim's domineering sister Auguste will not tolerate the dog in the house under any circumstances.

Because the young hunter Michael has carelessly fallen for the head forester's daughter, he incurs the wrath of his colleague Bertl. This not only earns him a beating, but also a charge for a crime he did not commit. Fortunately, he manages to flee to Africa, where he finds shelter with a friend as a big game hunter. But his heart soon pulls him back home.

Memorable moments from the life of the Catholic priest and naturopath from Wörishofen (1821-1897). The film depicts the successes of his hydrotherapy methods, his hostility from conventional medicine, and his rehabilitation by Pope Leo XIII.
