The stories of Jewish cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, who survived Auschwitz, and of star conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who worked with the Nazis, provide insight. The film centers around two people who represent musical culture during the Third Reich - albeit in very different ways. Wilhelm Furtwängler was a star conductor; Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, the cellist of the infamous Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz. Both shared a love for the classical German music.

The five unlikely friends Caroline, Eva, Estelle, Judith and Kiki have been meeting on the first Tuesday of every month for 15 years to gossip and gossip - and once a year they go on a short vacation together. Two beautiful young women kill men in a villa in Tuscany: Maya and Cora have been friends since childhood. Maya has an alcoholic artist father who deserted the family, a mentally disturbed mother and a violent brother, Carlo. Cora is from a wealthy middle-class family. Cora helps Maya to poison Carlo's friend Detlef, who is threatening to blackmail her. They then kill Carlo when he tries to rape Cora. Cora's family takes Maya in, and a happy time begins for her, particularly when they spend the summer in Italy.

Since the death of her husband, ex-teacher Franziska has had to look after her son David and his disabled brother Bobby on her own. Their new neighbors, Professor Maximilian and his wife Mechthild, bring a breath of fresh air into their lives.
