When Andreas arrives in the remote valley in the Austrian Alps, he is only about four years old - nobody knows for sure. He grows up to become a skilled farmhand and, as a young man, joins a work crew that builds one of the first mountain railroads, bringing light and noise to the valley along with electricity. He also finds the love of his life in Marie, but their happiness is short-lived. Only many years later, when Andreas embarks on his final journey, she is with him once again. Inspired by a few youngsters in a coffee bar talking about aging, a busy man sinks into the idyllic surrounding of a lake. At this place the man seems to have turned into an old Gentleman who lingers and enjoys life at that unique spot. His thoughts and encounters at the lake seem to be magically linked with the man in the coffee bar and its visitors.

The Munich commercial film director Augustin is thrown out because he hasn't paid the rent. Together with the unsuccessful Austrian writer Roland, whom he doesn't really like, he moves into his grandmother's former restaurant. The two men decide to reopen the pub. Although they only serve sausages and schnapps, they are surprisingly successful. But the landlord has other plans.
