A dramatisation of the workers' protests in June 1976 in Radom, seen from the perspective of the local Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party.

The story takes place in the second half of the 1950s. A young journalist wants to establish himself in his profession and sort out his personal life, but he is unable to distance himself from the grim events he witnesses. He manages to get a job at a popular newspaper. The editor-in-chief sends him to a village near Warsaw, which is to be absorbed by the city, to write a report on the civilizational changes taking place there. The journalist learns the story of a young prisoner awaiting execution on death row and becomes involved in the convict's case.

Young master Henry and his peer, the son of a rich Tatar landowner Salim Mirza, fall in love with the same girl. Hania is an orphan, the daughter of Henry's father's faithful servant. There is a fierce rivalry between the young men for the girl's favor, and it ends in a duel in which both are wounded. After recovering, Henry learns that Hania has passed smallpox and has been disfigured. The girl rejects Selim's proposals and joins a convent.
