Mieko is a housewife with some problems. Her husband is indifferent to her and her daughter Sayako refuses to go to school. One day, Mieko meets Kaori who is divorced. Mieko and Kaori worked at a same company years ago. Kaori tells Mieko that how she was swindled out of money by a man and, because of this, Mieko loans money to Kaori. Due to the loan, Mieko, herself, begins to do part-time work at a convenience store. While at work, Mieko catches a shoplifter Yukimi in the convenience store. It turns out, Mieko and Yukimi get along great. Mieko, Yukimi and Kaori decide to go to a karaoke room together. At the karaoke bar, the women hear the song "Smoke On The Water" by Deep Purple and decide to form a rock band!

Fifty elderly women are abandoned to die on a snow covered mountain, but instead wor together to build their own village named "Dendera." Some of the women wants to live their remaining days in peace, but others seek revenge against the villagers and their own families who left them to die.

When U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry's infamous Black Ships arrived in Uraga Harbour in 1853 saw his chance to let that breath out, and he and a friend snuck aboard Perry's ship in an attempt to return with him to America. When Perry's crew caught him and returned him to the mainland the ruling Shogunate put him under house arrest, a light sentence considering that the official penalty for leaving Japan was death. It was during his time of house arrest that Shōin saw the whirlwind of foreign influence that Perry's visit had initiated. To try and counteract this Shōin set up a school in his native Hagi in Yamaguchi Prefecture where he taught traditional Japanese values, military strategy and a redefinition of bushido, the samurai code. This school, the Shoka Sonjuku produced some of the leading revolutionaries who would bring about the downfall of the Shogunate.

Miharu, who returned to Japan due to sudden company bankruptcy, finds a letter in an empty room after a long absence. With memories of his old lover in his heart, Miharu heads north on a motorbike, relying on the letter. While riding a motorcycle, Miharu meets a man who has an 8mm camera that his former lover had.

Miyauchi Suguri, who moved from Kumamoto to Tokyo with her dog, starts working at a pet shop due to a strange turn of events. The "dog maniac" Suguri who even grabs dog poop without hesitation creates great commotion together with her carefree colleagues and customers each with a past.

Janitor Hiroharu Nonoyama (Ken Watanabe) discovers a coat filled with cash while working. The coat belongs to Daiki Iwasaki (Hiroshi Tamaki), who lives in a luxury apartment building. When Taiki offers Hiroharu a wad of cash as thanks for returning the coat, Hiroharu refuses and walks away... This incident sparks a connection between the two men, though each has reasons they don't want probed. As Taiki gradually opens up, Hiroharu still carries a secret he doesn't want anyone to know.
