Kassem Al Khoja

In 2011 the Syrian people rise up against the Assad regime. When Dr. Haider, a pediatric heart surgeon, loses his brother in a terrorist attack, he decides to fulfill his last wish, finding himself questioning everything he has always believed in.

Etienne, 18, tries to find his place within his family. The father, a former skinhead, can’t bear any longer his son’s behavior. He finds him indolent, lazy, dreamy, a night bird. Yet the young man is looking for his father’s admiration, while opposing him at the same time. This paradox, this identity crisis will bring Etienne to a point of no return one morning when his father asks him to come and help him dismantle a small camp of refugees just outside the village.

Young survivors discover VHS tapes in an abandoned store and are torn between burning them for warmth or preserving the past. Walid's addiction to smoking illustrates the absurd inflation of values under siege. Fares risks his safety to spend a moment of intimacy with his girlfriend amid bombings, while Saleh, a war profiteer, desperately searches for blood to save his wife, who is about to give birth. These chronicles explore the challenging decisions people must make under extreme conditions.
