Âşık Veysel, the prominent master of a thousand years old âşık (folk literature poet) tradition in Anatolia. By hitting the road with an enormous pain of love, Veysel matures himself with sorrow and finds "divine love" and at last transforms himself into the "folk poet" Âşık Veysel.

Mızrap is a 40-year old man who is deemed "no good". He lives in a small town in the province of Antakya. His father throws him out as a bluff, while scolding him, after Mizrap loses his job. But Mizrap, stung by his father's words, calls him on his bluff and leaves his father, mother, sister and niece to go on a cross-country trip to stay with his old army buddy Salim, who lives in a village near Mersin. Across the hard way he meets a number of representatives of marginalized groups in Turkish society.

Quiet and introverted toll booth clerk Kenan's life, a humdrum routine between the Tavsancik toll booth plaza and his home, will change the day the new operations chief comes to inspect Tavsancik.

Selim is a cruel father with a bigoted personality, whose occupation is unknown. He cannot accept his own daughter because she was born a girl. Ayşe was kept under house arrest by her cruel father until she reached school age. When her backward-thinking father refused to send her to school, Ayşe's misfortune reached a new level. Even when she starts school, her father's beatings leave her unable to breathe. Ayşe's life is now a living hell. Although finishing elementary school and starting high school triggers the same negative reactions from her father Selim, Ayşe continues her education at a school near her home. Finally, the university entrance exams come around. During this process, Ayşe's father, Selim, believes that Ayşe has studied enough. According to Selim, the time for marriage has long passed. Therefore, he believes that she should marry a suitable young man as soon as possible and is also calculating the dowry.

The film depicts a world in which Atatürk never became leader, the War of Independence never took place, and the Ottoman Republic continues to exist in a form adapted to the present day. The continuation of the Ottoman Republic instead of the Republic of Turkey, Ankara not being the capital, signs and license plates being in both Turkish and Arabic, and the sultan wearing a suit under his caftan are some of the tragicomic situations that make up the film's story.

September 1980. Mustafa 'Mehmet Ali Alabora' and his wife, who're both laborers are married for 5 years. The couple has nothing to do with politics and spend their days happily with their 3 year old daughter and their TV, despite the clamor of guns clashing outside every night. One Friday morning, they wake up and hear the voice of Hasan Mutlucan on radio and observe soldiers marching through the streets, the very confirmation of the military coup that has taken place. Arrests begin instantly in workplace and neighborhood. Yet Mustafa, far from being disturbed, assumes that all apprehensions must have rightful reasons. Until the night he's taken into custody, charged with the crimes of a militant code named "Sehmuz".
