Based on the short story of the same name by N. Lavrov. The story is inspired by real events that took place in early 20th-century Saint Petersburg.

Set in a small Ukrainian village during the outbreak of war with Germany in 1941 Private Chonkin, not overly endowed with intelligence, is left to guard a downed military aircraft. The authorities appear to have forgotten about him so this leaves him free to work his chams on the village postmistress, Njura, untill the local militia are tipped off.

A drama set at the end of the Forties and the beginning of the Fifties. In a distant garrison town, life proceeds at a measured past. The officers drink and debauch, while the soldiers serve. Meanwhile accidentally unleashed human emotions are suffocated by the atmosphere of cruelty and hypocrisy.

In the new Russia, former middle class citizens find themselves out in the dumps. Literally. They build homes, elect their own government, work, beg, scavenge, date and fight all while living in a huge city dump. Some try to beat the odds and return to society, but it seems that there is only one place left for them to go...

The film is based on the story of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky. A sad story about how the demagogue and idler Foma Opiskin lived in the house of Colonel Rostanev, took possession of the souls and minds of educated, intelligent people.

Rookie Alexey Gavrilov ends up in a unit where hazing reigns. He resists as much as he can to the three "grandfathers" who, on the eve of demobilization, decide to recoup as much as possible on the "turtles" for past humiliations. He soon finds a like-minded person. Unable to break the will of the obstinate, the "grandfathers" carry out a vile provocation, and then Alexei decides to take a desperate step.

A hospital nurse becomes an "international girl" — a prostitute who caters to foreigners with hard currency.

In the small seaside town of Chioggia, the wives, fiancées, and sisters of the fishermen wait for the men's return from the sea, passing the time with gossip and teasing each other. A bit of flirtation, a bit of rivalry, and from these sparks, instantly fanned by the gossiping women, the flames of jealousy and resentment flare up in the passionate southern personalities. The happiness of two young couples crumbles. The familiar bickering of the neighbors, their constant amusement, reaches a fever pitch of irreconcilable hostility.
