A fisherman, his wife and young daughter who is unable to speak lives in a village on the shores of a lake. Their story starts with a myth of a fish, trying to find a cure for their daughter.

Semih, who was discharged from the army a month early for his "heroism" in operations in the southeast, encounters his brother's funeral on the day he returns from the army. When he sets out to find his brother's killer, Semih is drawn into another battle filled with difficult questions. As he searches for the truth, he will realize that what was lost was not just his brother's life, but also the harsh reality of lives doomed to be lost in "The Other Istanbul," fueled by anger and helplessness.

Deniz goes to his hometown for his aunt Feraye's funeral. Nigar first offers her condolences to Deniz, then hands him her card and invites him to her home to discuss an important matter. Nigar wants to buy the land that Deniz inherited from his aunt, which includes a vineyard, a workshop, and olive groves. She makes a good offer. While Deniz is packing up her aunt's belongings at her aunt's house, she finds her aunt Feraye's diary.

Eflatun is a master miniature artist who's living in 17th century Istanbul. One day, he's taken to the vizier's mansion by force. There he learns that Danyal, one of the Ottoman princes who has ignited an insurrection, is arrested in a far off state and to be executed soon. Eflatun is ordered to make a portrait of the rebel prince who's been condemned to death in a Western manner to help the authorities be certain on the identity of him. Upon the order, Eflatun sets off for an arduous journey to Anatolia. He picks up a girl named Leyla en route. Together, they find themselves in a great venture fraught with sensations.

Guner Sernikli is a government official who, with his wife and their wheelchair bound daughter, has been assigned as the head librarian to this isolated province, virtually an exile since there is no library in the village. The family is warmly welcome, but these are the years of political anarchy and leftist/rightist clashes in big cities and the youth of the village inevitably follow the tides. They arrive in Vizontele, just as the situation is becoming really absurd. Guner brings wisdom; his daughter Tuba brings beauty, innocence and love. Some like the Mayor, Nazmi Dogan and crazy Emin appreciate these things but they are in the minority and confusion continues to reign. The story is based on the memories of writer-director Yılmaz Erdoğan of the last summer of his childhood in Hakkâri, Turkey in 1980.

Sükran's son Veysel works in a factory. Suffering as a result of her husband's political actions, she tries to save her son from the same fate.
