Moscow, 1952, mid-October, the XIX Congress of the CPSU had just ended. A communal apartment on Bolshaya Pirogovka. In one of the rooms lives the Petkevich family: Ariadna with her husband Boris and her parents, professor of philosophy Peter Kazimirovich and his wife Angelina Fyodorovna. For those few months that remained until Stalin's death, the family experiences a series of dramatic events. But on a background of terrible time, antisemitism, fabricated "case of doctors", denunciations and snitches, there are people who live their lives without losing dignity.

Young and extremely talented dancer Yulya Olshanskaya from a small mining town draws a “happy ticket”: she is noticed by a former ballet dancer Pototsky and he promises her a future of great ballerina, worthy of the main stage of the country. However, in order to become a diamond, anyone, even the most outstanding brilliant, needs to be cut, and the way to the legendary stage of The Bolshoi Theatre for Yulya lies through the walls of the ballet school, where the more capricious teacher Galina Mikhailovna Beletskaya takes custody of the rebellious provincial. Turning into a prima will require incredible self-denial, and Yulya herself will have to make sure that the big ballet is not only the whiteness of the packs, the gold of the boxes and the slip of silk ribbons. But no obstacles will stop the one who has the big dream.

Two childhood friends work in the same police department. Sergey Glukharov is an investigator, Denis Antoshin is an operative. An ordinary evening, which they decided to spend with friends in a restaurant, brought them a terrible surprise.

A rich and fatally ill man with an apartment, a car and a summer house offers her a girl's hand, heart and all real estate ". The next day after the announcement in the newspaper, a line of contenders lined up for Andrei. They all want to prove that they are in love with him .

The test of feelings, a love triangle, strikes and labor unrest at his native plant are increasingly captivating the protagonist and lead to separation from his wife. Each foray into the factory barricades turns into misfortune, but neither persuasion, nor the arrival of his wife's sister from Moscow, nor the discord with a close friend can stop Valery. But now the passions at the factory have subsided, and our hero is left with nothing: only fragments - no friends, no wife. Instead of his wife there is another woman who saved him from death...

Todorovsky's film examines life in a provincial Russian town (that is too small to even appear on the map) just outside of Stalingrad during the famous WWII Battle. This is NOT a traditional war film, and the epic events of the battle take place almost entirely off screen. Instead, Todorovsky outlines a crude love triangle between three young people caught up in the harsh Russian winter. The stark winter settings, and the characters' struggle for survival, are what make this film one worth watching.
