An ancient-Greece-obsessed American travels to the land of his ancestors to sell his old family homestead. However, plans go awry when he falls in love with a beautiful Greek woman; he changes course to salvage the village and change history.

In the wake of a disaster, Alice and her husband Petros take their young son Panagiotis to a provincial seaside town, seeking refuge. Working temporary jobs, Alice and Petros try to put their lives back together so they can return home to Athens. When Alice begins to realise the plan is not working – or worse, that it may not even exist – the distance between her and Petros begins to grow.

A disowned son of a Greek aristocrat arrives in Hungary in 1949 over his family’s communist beliefs and starts work in the Lágymányos tobacco factory, where he falls for Gizi Weiss and fathers their first child in 1953. Fiodor's Greek wife, Arsinoé, paints and stays away from politics, befriending Communist neighbors. Her health declines; the attentive Fiodor arranges care and, against the backdrop of Stalin's Great Purge, considers his options. He plays a chess game in which love of country, love of Arsinoé, ideology, petty jealousies, and the machinations of power roil in matters of life and death.
