One evening in the mid-sixties, Rolf Anschütz, a chef who runs a small restaurant in a town called Suhl in the middle of the East German province of Thuringen offers his guests a unique and exotic meal - Japanese Sukiyaki. It was intent to be a surprise for some of his best customers and it became a great success. Even the local paper wrote about it - and this should change the life of Rolf Anschütz forever.

The inhabitants of St. Maria curiously register the exotic film crew who want to shoot a Bollywood blockbuster in their home village. This is the brainchild of former local Franzi, now a production assistant in the city, who never wanted to return due to heartbreak: the ambitious Franzi has had enough of her home village and is pursuing a career in film in Vienna. When an idyllic and authentic backdrop is needed for a Bollywood movie, she quickly suggests her former home. The Indian crew is thrilled and invades the sleepy mountain village with huge catering buses, llamas and exotic dancers. Two cultures that couldn't be more different collide...

Monika, 20, nearsighted and dependent on her family, fails a risky eye laser operation and loses her sight. Her mother, Birgit, overwhelmed, places her in a municipal home for the blind, where Monika receives proper care and overcomes depression. With newfound strength, she seeks independence, which displeases Birgit. Monika enrols in a physical therapy apprenticeship, finding a new connection to the world and balancing disability with autonomy.

Berlin, 1989. Sascha is a young East German border guard and Franzi is a lively young West German woman who's just moved into a flat next to Sascha's watchtower at the Berlin Wall. Jenny’s parents are foaming from wrath and offer a reward: One-hundred thousand, later even a million, deutschmarks for whoever brings them their daughter back. The prospect of so much money gets east and west into quite a disarray – and in the end, the Wall really falls.

When rail lines are cut and workers laid off, Kurt Grantke sabotages the Commercial Railway to protect his town. Despite no injuries or evidence, the line to Storchenroda closes. Caught by Commissar Stahl, Kurt is freed by friends and, with his new wife, joins fellow railway workers in emigrating to South America.
