The quirky Chichikov settles into a tiny room filled with strange objects. Suddenly, the space around him comes to life: the curtains whisper nonsense, the cabinets slam shut, and the floorboards creak slyly. It seems as though Chichikov has stepped inside his famous little box, and the dead souls—neatly copied by him—have found their voice, risen up, and begun a devilish dance around their captor.

The film focuses on the relationship between Casimir and the monk Justin. If the former is looking for answers to the questions of existence, the latter is sure that he has already comprehended all the mysteries. Ambitious and domineering, Justin believes that people should be kept in constant fear. Kazimir, on the other hand, strives for freedom of the spirit and comes to the conclusion that people pray to the wrong God and are therefore unhappy. These antipodes value each other in their own way. Justin, sending Casimir to the stake, loses the only person close to him. In his last moments, Kazimir does not hate Justin.

The action takes place in the early 1950s. The endless meetings of the rural district party committee occupy almost all of the simple collective farmers' time, preventing them from working and solving their everyday problems...

However, an anonymous letter was sent from a higher authority to the institute, making absurd accusations against Telkin. Despite Vasily Vasilyevich being highly respected by everyone, his colleagues took this "signal" too seriously and, in doing so, caused an undeserved insult to their friend.
