The events of the film take place in the Soviet Union in the early 1980s. It is forbidden to listen to foreign radio stations, it is not safe to voice one’s opinions in front of strangers. Words of truth are spoken only in private kitchens behind the curtained windows. The KGB tap phones, survey the ‘unreliable’ and consistently step by step destroy all forms of decent. The protagonists challenge the inhumane state machine, putting on stake their very lives and proving that nothing and nobody can stop a person who is on his way to achieve a true freedom.

The wedding of Ivan Zimohlyada and Zina Opanasenko was decided to be moved from September to October by the entire crew. The crew was relocating to a new site, and the future newlyweds were entrusted with transporting equipment by barge. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the young couple had to abandon the barge and continue part of the journey on foot through the taiga.

The 1920s. Count Kabardin, who emigrated to France, sends Colonel Lavrov to Russia with the aim of bringing his daughter Irina to Paris. Irina married Chekist Andrei Slavinsky and joined the revolution. Under the guise of a White Guard lieutenant, Andrei is sent to France. He carries out a secret intelligence mission. But Irina believes that her husband has died. The chairman of the Cheka, learning of Lavrov's visit, gives him the opportunity to take Irina to France and gives her a new assignment and a password for Andrei.

Boris Zhadanovsky, a hereditary nobleman and officer who was predicted to have a brilliant military career, sides with the rebellious people. In 1905, Zhadanovsky is sentenced to death for his revolutionary activities. However, a powerful strike movement organized in response to the court's decision forces the tsarist government to commute the sentence to life imprisonment. After the revolution, Zhadanovsky joins the Red Army and dies fighting the White Army.

The command instructs the reconnaissance group a difficult and dangerous operation — to obtain from the enemy a map of the mined sections of the river, which requires penetrating into the city captured by the Germans.
