Feminist Aurora Noyes and her daughter Lotta arrive in town to politicize the women. Abe finds Lotta intellectually stimulating and loses interest in Mary. After war is declared, the eligible men in town enlist, Aurora ousts Joe, then convinces the townswomen to assume men's jobs and wear men's clothes, to the detriment of Mary's business.

He finds a pretty girl in his house and the police identify her as criminal Philadelphia Mary but George tells them that she is his niece that he was expecting; when the police are gone, George learns that her name is Betty McCarthy and makes her agree to spy on Virginia.

Tom and “Bettina” fall in love much to his mother’s dismay but when the deception is finally revealed all ends well.
