The film tells the story of the friendship between Johann and Ludwig as they strive for the ultimate “buddy” relationship. But their symbiotic relationship is thrown out of balance: Ludwig strives to tighten the bonds ever closer, but Johann discovers happiness in the form of love for Ludwig’s sister, Vera. But because Ludwig hates her, the couple keep their relationship secret. But secrets have a way of coming out and Ludwig is wounded to the core. As the finals of the rowing competition draw closer, Ludwig has already set his sights on a greater goal: to preserve their friendship forever, no longer in life but in death.

Colonel Mortimer's son Gregory, his pride and joy, returns to the ancestral Cornish estate by the sea for the summer after loosing that year's only Horse Guards officer promotion to his neighbor-buddy Eric. By ancestral tradition, that means another delay too for his long-planned marriage with neighbor's daughter Rebecca, who already doubts if the are actually in love. Mortimer's new housekeeper Elisabeth proves irresistible for father (platonically) and son, but is held back by a family secret concerning her late mother Catherine. On her first evening in Cornwall, Grace meets Lilian's almost-fiancé, Morris Green, while jogging on the beach. They are both fascinated by each other – without knowing who the other is. After his initial shock, Lord Blixton is delighted to see Charlotte again and to meet Grace, and introduces her to Lilian and Harry. Unlike Harry, who is happy about the new addition to the family, Lilian does everything she can to get rid of the Bolds.
