Injustice and the demands of the world can cause stress for many people. Some of them, however, explode. This includes a waitress serving a grouchy loan shark, an altercation between two motorists, an ill-fated wedding reception, and a wealthy businessman who tries to buy his family out of trouble.

Juan Benatti, a tango singer in a typical quartet, is left in charge of five-year-old Ignacio, the son of the group's director, Horacio, and Marisa, when his parents are forced into exile for political reasons. Ignacio calls Juan "grandfather" and becomes a father to him. Horacio dies abroad; his mother remarries and demands the boy. But since he doesn't get along with his mother's new partner, custody finally falls to Juan, who raises the boy until he graduates from high school. He then turns down university to become a musician in a rock group, where he will be the voice and host.

The Night of the Pencils was a series of kidnappings and forced disappearances, followed by the torture, rape, and murder of a number of young students during the last Argentine dictatorship (known as the National Reorganization Process). The kidnappings took place over the course of several days beginning on September 16, 1976.
