Kodaira Megumi is a normal 17-year-old girl who attends a public high school in Tokyo. No matter how hard she tries, she just can't study, and people around her say she's unmotivated. In fact, her IQ is 76. Although she does not have an intellectual disability (IQ less than 70), she falls under "borderline intelligence", which is below average. People with borderline intelligence are said to make up 14% of the population, which equates to 5 people in a class of 35 people. Megumi has been left behind by society as she is forced to compete in the same arena as people of average intelligence. Then, due to a certain mistake, a child becomes pregnant and a tragedy occurs.

Their parents are dead. They should be sad, but they can't cry. So they form a kick-ass band. This is the story of four 13-year-olds in search of their emotions.

Inspired by true events, the story begins with Japanese rugby officials dwelling on a humiliating anniversary, a 145-17 defeat by the New Zealand All Blacks in the 1995 World Cup. Officials question their decision to appoint Eddie Jones, to coach their national team for the 2015 World Cup. Jones plans to defy convention in order to put a stop to Japan being the laughing stock of world rugby.

Seven friends part ways after their last day at school. Some seek their fortune in Tokyo, others remain in their hometown Maebashi. Over the course of ten years, their paths keep crossing, and while they experience losses and broken dreams, they learn about the value of friendship.

In suburban Tokyo in 1945, years of war and concentrated air raids by US forces have left the city in tatters and the population poor, tired, and hungry. Eldest daughter Rinko is a middle school student who keeps running away and coming back home with her boyfriend Kenichiro. Rinko’s mother Mayumi has difficulty raising her kids and the apples. One night, before Rinko's birthday, Rinko's father Tamao brings a horse with a ribbon as her birthday present. Tamao actsas he pleases. The mother suffers from his impulsiveness. To borrow money, Rinko comes back home after a long time away from home. There, Rinko sees the horse.

The confused intellectual would rather not get involved with this unlikely and unexpected lover but decides to follow his destiny, wherever it (she?) may take him.
