When his colleague presents him with (forged) evidence of his wife Sylvette's unfaithfulness, factory owner Jean Sourdier kills him in a fit of rage. After fifteen years in prison he is determined to take revenge on his wife by killing Ninette, a daughter from her second marriage.

John Van Laer is the overseer of a vast rubber plantation in the Dutch East Indies. His new wife Renee joins him at the plantation, but the monotony of her existence and unbearable heat soon drive her to distraction. One of Van Laer's workmen takes advantage of the boss' absence to seduce Renee.

Despite the warnings of Toontje, his "slapie," he quickly becomes engaged to Betsy. Soon it becomes apparent that Betsy is too frivolous for the respectable Daan, and she ends the engagement. She prefers to remain the friend of the entire company.
