Elena Meshcheryakova is a veterinarian at an animal clinic. One day, she spots a stranger in a crowd who leaves an unforgettable impression on her. But how can she gather the courage to simply approach him and introduce herself? Fate intervenes when he shows up at the clinic, wanting to get rid of his dog. Elena refuses to put the poor animal down and instead takes it in herself. As events unfold, Elena ends up in a hospital where the head psychiatrist happens to be a friend of the man she fell for. It is he who ultimately helps her find happiness.

1925. José Raúl Capablanca, a famous Cuban chess player and employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, arrives in Moscow for an international chess tournament. The trip, taking place under Machado's dictatorship, casts doubt on his future in this position. The film shows Capablanca's dramatic matches with Lasker, Tartakower, and Bogolubov, his tragic love for Bolshoi Theatre ballerina Sasha Mozhaeva, and a simultaneous game in which he lost to the very young Mikhail Botvinnik.

The old forester dies in a fight with poachers, and his faithful friend, the lynx Kunak, goes into the taiga. The new forester Drozdov wants to bring Kunak back and patiently accustoms the lynx to himself.
